so i finally got one for the mini growers brigade...

here is a plant i got from a society meeting raffle in Oct 2008.. so almost a year ago... i wonder if the previous owner decided to put it in the raffle because the flowers are so small

Restrepia cuprea


This species is found on the slopes of the Central Cordillera in Colombia at heights greater than 1500m. The species name 'cuprea' alludes to the 'copper coloured' synsepal (that's the big bit) of the flower.

As I grow everything outside... this plant has been subjected to > 40 celsius and down to about 6 celsius temperatures... the plant does have a few beaten up leaves but for a plant with only 7 leaves, I did get 3 flowers, so i figure it mustn't hate me and my growing conditions that much! oh the whole plant is in a 50mm tube and is only 8 cms high.

That is wonderful, and your right it must like what your doing or it wouldnt be putting on such a display. well done. I cant decide how much I like restrepias. I see one like yours, as pictured so beautifully and I fall for them but sometimes I see them and am really not that impressed, I will see if i keep liking them and one day might get one, think its as the flowers are so small on some that there is so much leaf compared to flower but yours is such a wonderful colour I cant help but love it.

Carrie, these botanicals are a funny bunch... there are some that i totally love, and some that are just so small that, well... even i can't see them hehehe..

I do have a couple of others, Tom, including Pleuro phalangifera and grobyi and Pleuro schweinfurthii.

However, there is one plant that i am dying to get a piece of... Myoxanthus serripetalus, but I'm afraid that I don't have a controlled enviro that would be good enough for it...

Damn! That is nice one. How tall is the plant? I only have one Myoxanthus species and I will love to add this one to my collection if it is not too big.

lol, Ron, pls tell me ur kidding about the close up shot... this was the photo i decided to use after taking about 30 pics because the rest were so out of focus hahaha... i need to get a micro lens i think.... otherwise, which part did u want me to focus on and I'll see if I can make it work.

Tom, that Myoxanthus was quite a nice specimen size plant, so fully grown each growth would be about 25 cms tall.

Cute little blooms, but probably would die just looking at me and my growing conditions. LOL.
