Epidendrum nocturnum

Came home tonight and this guy was open. No scent yet. 4 more spikes to go . Butt ugly plant but I put up with it for the blooms.

Like the flower. From what you show of it, the plant looks similar to a dendrobium

It's one of the reed stemmed Epidendrums. About 2 feet of leggyness.

Love the bloom on this one. Maybe in the light of day tomorrow it will have a nice fragrance too.

I have a couple epidendrums and I love the flowers on them. I don't have this one and really like it. Isn't it funny that so many orchids are such ugly plants but ohhhhhhhhhhh do they make up for it when they bloom! One thing that I don't understand is that in Orchid Shows there is so much emphasis put on making the plant itself look better than they do in nature. To me it is all about having a healthy plant and most of all the flowers. Half my Phals will never make it to a show after having been bombarded by a hail storm this summer. The leaves are pitted like the surface of the moon but the flowers are perfect to me and that is what I see, not the leaves

Bruce, Na no scent during the day. Usually around two days after opening, it starts pushing out a highly sweet sent just after sunset and lasting a couple of hours.

I am sure your right Bruce...and the species name nocturnum = night. Commonly known as the 'night scented orchid'. I have always found it interesting that orchids conserve their fragrating for only the time of the day that their pollinators are active. Also, most night pollinated orchids are white...no need for color to attract pollinator.

Very nice Stephen! There are a few in this group of Epis that are well worth having in a collection! Epi parkinsonianum is another very cool one, with evening scent.. Do you have Epi ciliare?

Ron - I would love have either one of those but space is an issue. I don't think I could deal with a parkinsonianum but am considering replacing one of my Catts with a ciliare.
BTW, the Ancistrochilus rothschildianus you helped me get has about 6 spikes on it this year!
