Do Paphs Really Need Deep Pots?

I have read that paphs should be grown in deep pots. I have 3 Paphs (Maudiae) in pots that are 3" w x 3.75" deep. To pot them up, I'm looking for slotted, cone-center pots the next size larger but am unable to find 4" pots that are proportionally deeper. Searching the internet, the only 4" pots of any kind I have found measure 4" w x 3.5" deep. Will these paphs do well in pots that are wider than they are tall?

If this size pot isn't suitable, I will appreciate any suggestions for finding deeper pots.

I have paphs in normal pots but then again I'm not the expert here

Nor am I any kind of expert, but I know some growers use a deep pot for paphs. I have several in ordinary pots that seem to do just fine, so I'm not sure the depth of the pot is as important as your day to day care and growing habits.

i grow mine is normal pots... seems to grow alright for me...

i'd worry about the deep pots seeing as you will have a greater chance of seeing drier top and then the bottom of the pot is still wet.... and that could lead to root rot.

best thing to do is work out your watering habits and play around with your mix and pots so that it will fit that... also, i put larger bark on the lower part of the pots and smaller bark on the top... this just allows greater aeration to the bottom part allowing it to dry as fast as the top part of the pot.

No expert here either, but we grow ours in normal pots too. Only thing we have in a deep pot is a phrag that likes to stay wet.

Agree with everyone. Deep pots aren't necessary. Having said that, most Paph breeders and specialty growers grow in deep pots. Don't, however, know why.
