That last pic looks really interesting though--wish there was a closer view. The different colors on the flower parts make it intriguing, I think. Definitely not the blah brown of the other. Though you know, you're right about the photography. In the hands of someone like Prem, for instance, even the most dried out, weedy twig can end up looking glamorous.

Well, the color is kind of a great unknown on that one. Who knows what it might look like, but I thought the flower shape was just so cool.

Max sophrinitis is a way cool plant. When grown well this plant is covered with little orange flowers and can bloom a few times a year.

This is Max triloris and it is growing well in S/H. I would recommend the larger growing Max for S/H. There are some huge species that are too big for my little GH. The small ones do better mounted.

SEE the picture quality DOES make all the difference. That uncata looks sooooo much better in your photo. I must give these tan (or bronze) ones another chance.

The variabilis atropurpurea (Mike's dark form) was another one I didn't think I wanted until the guy I got it from talked me into it. The flowers really do look like little globs of reddish, black velvet. So nifty, so nifty....

Mike - so do you think the one I posted the pic of is worth getting?

OK, those are awesome. Some of them are not "pretty", but definitely different and more colorful than my only one, which is in fact tannish and it's name says so (Max. brunnea #1).Thanks for sharing and giving closeups, Mike!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Kevin. I do like hybrids but usually when the best qualities of the species are brought out in the flower. I can't see that being any more spectacular than some of the Max species out there or even the two species by themselves.. Now if you got it for near nothing then "Heck yeah!".

Look up longissima, callichroma, schunkiana, fractiflexa, nigrescens and picta to name a few of the cool colored or shaped Max.
