second spike growing, cut first spike?

I've had the same phal orchid for about a year and half now, I've also had the same spike for that year and half and it's bloomed twice already from that spike (the spike grew another spike on it). Now there's a little spike growing out of the actual orchid and not off of the first spike. The first spike has done flowering, should I just cut it off completely and let the small second spike grow? Or leave it as it is? The first spike is still green and I've recently cut right above the third node.

hi, i would leave the spike on, if the plant with roots is healthy, it might bloom again from the old spike, unless it turns brown then its time to cut it.

I'd remove the old spike so the plant does not use it's energy to bloom a few blooms on the end of it. Let the plant use that energy to give you a better show on the new spike.

I agree with smwboxer. I would cut the old spike off and let the plants strenght go to the new spike. By doing so you may get more flowers and larger ones on the new spike. Bill

The only thing is that the new spike is brown. Is that normal?

I'd remove the old spike so the plant does not use it's energy to bloom a few blooms on the end of it. Let the plant use that energy to give you a better show on the new spike.

I agree that you should cut the old spike and allow all that energy to go to the new spike. Your blooms from the new spike will be all the better for this.
