Echeveria are native to Mexico and Central America. This specific Echeveria is not winter hardy. The memebers of the Sempervivum genus (Hen and Chicks) which is also in the family Crassulaceae are winter hardy and look very similar in that they grow in a rosette form and have the typical star-shaped flowers. Many of these can handle temps to 38 ~ 40 deg F if kept dry. Also their color can change depending on the amount of sun; E. affinis v Black Prince and its cultivar Black Knight are a deep black-purple in the summer sun but turn green with winter's gray skies.
