Basal keikis

Hi, I have a phal. with (3) basal keikis, it also had one on a spike that i have since cut and potted, the basal keikis however seem to be part of the mother plant and there is not a clear spot to cut between the (2) plants without damaging one, any advice would be appreciated. hank....

I personally leave basal keikis unless there is a reason to remove them. They help develop nice specimen plants. In the past I did have a Phal. mannii that had a basal keiki that was being crushed and deformed by the mother plant and it had its own root system, so I did end up removing it and it did fine.

I also leave the basal keikei's alone. I have a large phal with one and no obvious root system that i've left like that for a couple years.

Sometimes basal keikis will separate easily from the mother plant after they have established their own root system, other times they seem to be grown together permanently. I usually just leave them alone too and like Susan hope for a nice specimen plant.
