Purpose of fungicide when deflasking

I've been doing research in preparation for deflasking, and I've been reading conflicting things about the use of fungicide. The one I have on hand is Physan. I've read that some people use that. I've read that others say it's better not to use a systemic fungicide. I've also read that some people don't use a fungicide at all saying it does more harm than good and inhibits growth. In fact, the deflasking instructions that came with my flask make no mention of fungicide.

My question is, what exactly is the purpose of using fungicide on newly deflasked seedlings? Does it help them adjust to a non-sterile environment? Is it to prevent infection in any seedlings that may have been damaged while deflasking? Any comments or personal experience are welcome.

I've not used fungicide the three times I've deflasked mini-catts, and have had no problems. I did put them into brand new trays and used a new bag of sphagnum. I am also keeping them in a different room from all other orchids.

But I'm sure there are many others with much more experience.

One website says it's to help prevent root rot and damping off. I've done it both ways and not seen a difference.

We always seem to use fungicide when deflasking. I have never not used it when deflasking. I have always heard that it keeps fungus from taking over the newly potted orchids. (a safety precaution)

I'd suggest it depends on your environment and media, ie your growing conditions and the species used. I was recommended using Subdue at 10 eyedroppers per gallon when I first started deflasking, and I did it religiously. I've since stopped using any and see no appreciable difference. I am growing Cyms and my conditions are almost ideal. Probably if I were doing dense compots I would be more inclined but as I do plugs or 4 to a 2" pot there is plenty of circulation. Also I'm using a good media.

I don't use fungicide when deflasking, probably a couple hundred flasks by now, and haven't had any problems(OK, not every plant lives). They are coming out of a sterile environment.
