a 10% bleach solution for at least 10 min will kill just about anything. Baking some of the expanded materiels may not be advisable because if water has wicked into one of the air pockets and vaporizes too quickly for it to escape it may explode. You can always use the bleach then put in another tub of water with out the bleach but add in a dechlorinator that you can get very inexpensively from a pet supply store in the aquarium section.
I reuse the pellets but only after a disinfecting soak, lots of rinsing and then a final 30+min boiling. Not much smell, actually. I always use the vent hood when boiling so that may be why I don't notice an odor.
If I'm using them on the same plant again, I'll just skip the boiling.
Although, I must admit there's been a time or two when I just felt lazy and pitched the whole mess. Gin's such a bad influence.![]()
