Oncidium NOID

I couldn't resist picking this one up at our Sunday market a couple of weeks ago. The cost was a mere 4EUR.
I assume it' s a hybrid Oncidium.

Lovely. Does it have a light fragrance too? Looks very similar to one we have here. Beautiful, showy orchid plant regardless of the name. With blooms like that, and that many, well, it would have a home here! haha...

I too am believing it to be a Colmanara Wildcat. This intergeneric hybrid is a cross between two other hybrids; Odontonia (Miltonia x Odontoglossum) and Odontocidium (Oncidium x Odontoglossum).
There are many grexes of this cross available and there should be a scent involved too.

These plants are mass-produced by meristem techniques. I don't know where your plants come from ; here in UK I know that if I buy a plant like this from a small orchid nursery , it was almost certainly grown in The Netherlands because the nursery owner will have popped across the channel and filled a van with a load of plants in flower . If I buy in a Supemarket, it almost certainly came from Taiwan - our big Supermarkets don't do that kind of exercise ! I think that the Wildcat mentioned comes from Taiwan , and the Jungle Monarch I mentioned - when we had a similar discussion recently - comes from The Netherlands , but apart from all that there is a difference in flower size too. The smaller flowers are the Jungle Monarchs.

I know Geoff some where on-line I saw photo's of a large concern in the Netherlands that as you say mass produce meristem orchids. Not only was this "plant' modern in appearance, it also had the look of a High Tech. manufacturer on the interior of the building (tons of gleaming metal everywhere). I really do not know where the majority of our orchid's here in the states come from. I have read that most Cattleyas come in from Taiwan, but I do not know about others. Anyone else know? AL
