You know, I did repot it and cut off the little ends that were black/brown and it has been just fine so far. I havent seen the spike dying and it looks ok.
I also bought a really beautiful harlequin phal last week at Lowes that someone had dropped the whole thing and broken the glass pot it was in . The plant fell out of its plastic clear pot also and was laying on the shelf un-rooted. I got it half price, took it to work and then home and re-potted it into fresh bark and the flowers have not even noticed!! They are just as beautiful and the un-opened buds are opening. So it does appear that if you dont lose a lot roots, and put the plant back into what they came from, they will do alright when re-potted. Or so it has been with these two little phals.
I am much relieved as I am new to this and have much fear when repotting them.
