Do you feed your fish outside?

Just kind of curious. I don't. When I first got my "mutts", they were about 1 1/2 inches long. After one summer outside, they grew to about 6 inches without any feeding from me.

We have cottonwood trees throwing out their seeds right now. Everything is white with the cotton and a lot of the stuff is landing in the pond. I was outside the other day and noticed the fish eating the seeds and cotton that was landing on the pond. Thought that was kind of strange, but I would imagine the seeds would be a good source of nutrition for the fish.

So, do you feed yours?

I don't have a pond <insert heavy sigh of longing> but most people I've talked to who *do* have them, say it's not necessary. Their experience is like yours Kev--they grow and thrive with no supplementary feeding needed.

We feed ours, but we sure wouldn't have to, what with all the bugs and such. They sure seem to like the taste of that dog food though...

We feed ours dry cat food (higher protein) than dog food(sorry Louis). With the quantity of fish in our ponds , I don't think they would get enough to eat naturally ,and be healthy. Plus it makes them very friendly !

We feed our fish when the plants start to die away and it starts to get cold at night and warm during the day. They are only active when the water warms and since they have nothing to eat it is necessary for flakes or the floating pellets. But then again, a blue heron keeps eating our fish at the end of the summer every year....he didn't get any so far this year. Hehe, we put up some screen door stuff to keep him out...it has worked so far.
