Orchid Patience

I've just recently first bloomed several cymbidiums I grew from seedlings and it is very rewarding!

I, obviously, have absolutely no patience! I always buy blooming plants. A few buds are good as I want it to last, but I hate bloom blast.

too difficult this one ; if its on my wish list , and if I can afford it and/or my wife's not looking, I buy it when I see it.

When I was a young man i used to laugh at 70 year old men buying seedlings ... now that my next birthday is my 80th I still can't stop myself doing the same....

I find it difficult to buy orchids that arent in bloom here, I have just bought a couple of flask online but on the whole I have bought my orchids in near bloom, mainly because that was all taht was available. I have occaisionally bought one that has finished flowering if i ever manage to find one as they tend to be a bit cheaper. I love them anyway whether they are flowering or not! Its funny but you really end up getting to know your plants, with all the love and attention and care they take you are constantly looking for new little bumps, blotches, post, buds, leaves, roots etc etc etc!!!

I'll use the excuse that I'm new to orchids - maybe when I know what I'm doing, I'll try seedlings, but now, I want to see success. That's why I voted to get it in bud. I garden and love to plant seeds and nurture the babies as they come along, but I don't know about waiting for years. Maybe, eventually....

My children have taught me much patience. I am content to nurture a seedling to feel the reward at its first bloom.

I love to get small phaleanopsis and grow it until it bloom. It may take 2 years to bloom but the satisfaction is marvelous including the curosity of the colour of the flowers.

For me it mostly depends on what I have to chose from at that present time. I like to get some that are mature enough to bloom, but I also like to get seedlings because you usually can get more seedlings for the price of one in bloom.

I think its a journey all of us make..as beginners, its orchids which are flowering already, then plants which are in bud, then its healthy plants which you then try to get to bloom, then its seedlings and finally for the hardcore...flasking!

I vote seedlings. I have also blooming Vanda's, but I like seedlings more. It's more rewarding to get them in bloom. When you see it grow and get the first spike.
