Schomb. Orchid Spike!

When I bought this no name Schomburgkia the lady sneered and said "good luck blooming it". Apparently she would get it to spike and then it would go south. I got it to flowers once...but that was her spike. This one is mine. I was upset it wasn't doing well on its driftwood...so I put it under a palm tree to shrivel the rest of the way. I hit it with the hose (when I remember it's under all the fronds) once in a while. And it does this! And I do not remember it having all these healthy roots when I tossed it here either.

Take a picture when it blooms...and show it to her! LOL!

Benign neglect...must be it. lol I sat this one dendrobium out on the front porch and had forgotten it until recently. It was out of it's pot, laying on the cement...and had grown the healthiest new section. Dumb me brought it out back...it's looking sad. I'm thinking there are a few plants about to receive some Benign Neglect as you put it. lol Starting with the Tampensis! It's weird too...the bugs disappear when I sit them near the ground. Hmm....

These guys hate a lot of attention especially of the wet kind. Mine has 6 spikes, no wait make that 5 one just collapsed due to my watering the chid next to it, GRRRRR

So just the idea that it might get splashed with water and your Schomburgkia aborts a spike. Gee your going to have to be awfully careful with that water. One thing that allows some of your orchids to thrive and grow under 'benign neglect' is your usually high humidity. Out here in New Mexico I couldn't even consider putting my orchids outside because if I did they would freeze out in winter and dry roast much of the rest of the year. You guys are graced with a great climate for all the warm growers! AL

Maybe MOST of the year, Al...but Texas Summers can "roast" orchids very quickly with high temperatures and NO humidity in the middle of Summer! We are off to the Shreveport AOS show this morning...There are three vendors I have to see...Betty :-)

Yes, we are "graced" with high humidity. It still gets good and hot to go with it. Some days in the summer you can wear a totally wrinkled shirt outside for a couple minutes and the wrinkles just get steamed right out. lol Not sure if I would call it being "graced" with good weather or not though. lol Down here a good parking spot has nothing to do with being close to the door. It is which parking spot has a tree next to it and a little shade so you don't lose the skin off the back of your legs when you sit on your cars hot little seats!

Yah Connie I lived in the Fort Lauderdale area for several years and I certainly remember the heat. My parents had Vanda orchids amongst others and I was sometimes put in charge of watering them. Well as a teenager maybe they got watered , maybe not. They seemed to do just fine without water for a week or more if my memory serves me correctly. Believe me I remember 100% humidity and one day at a park when it was 100 degrees F.! Betty I bet your having fun at the show! I would love to here what you end up buying.........AL
