Don't despair quite yet. They can come back from the brink, as long as they have a healthy root or two. When mine was in such dire straits, someone suggested misting the leaves (avoiding the crown--very important!) to help it take in/retain more moisture, since its roots were mostly gone. No idea if that actually helped, but it did recover, so I'll pass that suggestion on to you.

Also, orchids don't like to be wiggly in their pots, so if you can stabilize it somehow (rhizome clip, wire, whatever), or at least try not to jostle it, that will also encourage roots.
