Phalaenopsis (Dragon Tree Eagle X speciosa)

Not all Phalaenopsis crosses looks nice, in fact, this flower that I came across in the nursery does not look very appealing. The petals are not uniformed and only the vibrant color gives it some credit. However, Phalaenopsis Dragon Tree Eagle, the parent, looks much much better. Two beautiful parent gives one failed experiment.

the color looks sweet to me. perhaps with another crossing or two they might give out a stunning hybrid (skip generation genetics?) hehe......thanks for sharing

Hi Bro Vincent,

The fault does not lies with the cross, the owner/hybrider should know what he want to achieve through this cross and hit a balance in the shape, form & color. DTE has good shape, form and intense color but speciosa got wild form and white base color in the flower which will reverse whatever good traits that passed down from the cross. The end result is a lighter color DTE but totally out of shape & form flower from this cross...

Just my 2 cents opinion.

Interesting coloration but, I agree, not a very appealing flower.

Quite possible, I suppose, that the hybridizer was hoping to get speciosa's wild coloration but with a yellow background instead of the white.

Ummm, I just noticed this, but the reason why the flower looks terrible is because the pollina is missing and the stigmatic cavity is closed; it has been pollinated. My Penang Girl looked like this in a few days after it was pollinated, so I am sure the flower looked a LOT better post pollination.

maybe phal spring joy canary x phal dte would be a nice combo? hmmm
