    Default Surprised by my Banfieldara!

I somehow acquired this orchid without ever wanting it. It had one spike, some spotted leaves and a bunch of desiccated buds looking like they were dead before they ever grew. And I certainly had no idea what a "Banfieldara" was. This one is called Gilded Tower 'Thai Gold' (patent process initiated, whatever that means). Anyway, I did find out that it was a hybrid consisting of Ada x Brassia x Odontoglossum - not really my favorites. It's been resented and neglected since I found it among the orchids I DID bring home from a local nursery. But lo and behold what I found this morning!

No fragrance, I'm afraid, but we can't have everything, can we? I'm counting on my angraecum leonis to supply some fragrance in a few months - and my mini-cym Golden Elf is supposed to have a scent - so we'll see. My next object of desire is a zygopetalum, which are supposed to be heavenly.

Thank you - it was really luck that saved this plant because I seriously hadn't wanted it, and didn't really tend to it the way I do my others. Now, of course, I have changed my mind and I'm rather taken with it. There are 2 more buds that I think will bloom and I'm looking forward to them.

This is really beautiful, and I learned something! I have an almost identical orchid, bought to cheer up the home office, and have been trying to figure out what it was! What a nice coincidence. One of the highways here is called "The Banfield Expressway". I wonder if it's related.
