A throw-away noid intergeneric with inappropriate care.... bloomed nicely!

Last year I bought this at a big box store to brighten my bathroom window. After it bloomed, I thought, it's not taking up much room, so I re-potted it. It's been in my workplace window for much of the past year. About 70 degrees day and night, watered with mineral-laden workplace water, with a few drops of Miraco-grow 8-7-6 houseplant food per liter. That's what the other plants there get. South window. It grew a new pseudobulb. After about 10 months, the new pseudobulb sent up a new spike. It's been blooming now for 2 or 3 months. This is not the care I give at home. Maybe I should.

I'm glad you didn't throw it away, Daniel...Sometimes "benign neglect" is the best treatment we can give our orchids!Who was it that said "if it isn't broke, don't fix it!" LOL...Betty

Thanks for the comments. I had begun to despair of getting an oncidium-type to bloom, thien this one and a Stefan Isler both bloomed. This is similar to the Stefan Isler, so maybe that's the right type for me.

Very cool - I unintentionally ended up with a temperamental Banfieldara that dropped all but 3 of its buds, looked like it had mildewed leaves, and I didn't think I'd like it even if it was healthy. Short story - neglected and very disinterested - until one morning I spotted it in the corner with the wildest, neatest gold and green and spotted and spidery bloom - and it blew me away! It's now my favorite Martian, but I'm not changing its care - look what you came up with!

I keep telling one of my friends who is starting with a few orchids that she is too nice to them!
(Of course, she might take me more seriously if I wasn't busy collecting rainwater for mine, and mixing up their special "food" etc.)

I use rainwater and special mix for my others too. And now for this one - maybe it won't bloom again now!
