Used to be deadly scared of them as a child as the elders would always warn us that if bitten by one at noon death was inevitable. Why noon? Nobody ever explained. LOL

Holy Leaping Poirot! Apart from the Agamids, I have 3 skinks and 2 huge monitor lizards that visit my orchid house regularly. With all the super fertilisers used on the orchid plants - hey- there's a real possibility of a Jurassic Park scenario here!! Time to put up the electrified fence. LOL

Just be careful of which side of the fence you're on when you flip the switch.

I love the males colors....although the pale female is pretty too. We have a ton of these all over and after I found out they like bugs I stopped being scared of them. Right now the baby ones are all over. I think they call the kind here Anoles.

Think I now need to join a reptile forum to unleash another addiction other than orchids. Must be amazing to experience that kind of wildlife in your backgarden.

Anoles are from a completely different family, Connie. (And anoles are indeed the type of lizard that you are most likely seeing.)

Yes it was even more amazing when I first moved here more than 25 years ago. There was a 4 acre swamp 50 metres in front of my house and I used to enjoy the sight of waterbirds while sitting in the front porch. Some nights we were treated to some amazing fireflies display! October and November were particularly busy months with the migratory birds stopping over on their journey to their wintering grounds. The swamp was full of fish especially snakeheads, claria catfish, different varieties of gouramy and that delightful fighting fish Betta splendens, and various barbs. And about 10 years ago the housing developer came in and drained the swamp and turned it into a housing area with about 80 houses. I can't even enjoy the sunset any more, let alone the birds.

There were snakes aplenty. I had to kill 3 cobras that strayed in to the house, 8 more that came into the compound and even a huge banded krait. I had to kill them as there was no time to call the Fire Department, not when the wife was hysterical at the sight of snakes. I have posted about how a cobra killed our favourite dog. But there were other good things too, like seeing the family of otters, the occasional mongoose and being visited 3 times by panggolins. Now the only wild things that visit us are a family of civet cats that make our ceiling their occasional holiday home. Oh yes there is another family of otters that have taken residence in the stream near the house and sometimes we see them running along the roadside.

WOW!!!!! Crocodile Dundee!!!! The irony of my love for the tropics, sub tropics and the natural world it contains is that I fear snakes. Scared and would sob like a child if I didnt have a stroke first. Love my holidays but each location is assessed in snake population and habitat. If their are lots and widespread i not going there. Thought of cobra killing ur dog. Couldnt bare to read about it. How awful and traumatic. U or your wife have therapy. Still horror aside love to see more of your wilderness but plants , mammals, insects, birds, amphibs and lizards in situ within your orchid paradise. Screensavers! Not snakes. You could take up another addiction of photography just for our perusal.
