Bpl. Golden Peacock 'Orange Beauty'

I have two orange orchids in bloom at the same time; a mini vanda and this one. This one is a difficult cross for me. I only seem to get two flowers per spike even though I know it should have 5-6 flowers or more per spike. Also; my second spike will always abort its' flowers. I do not know why, this is the second time it has done this. Guess it needs more....something so I'll be moving it into a higher sun area. I also got the shock of seeing bugs on the newly opened flower...about had a hissy fit...then I went and got the earswabs and alcohol.

I hear it is supposed to get brighter orange as it goes along. When they opened they were this dingy orange and already they are brighter. The labellum on the one that opened with bugs has a black dot in there and I would assume it's from me drenching the newly opened flower in alcohol.

Nice shape. A brigher orange will be lovely. A Richard Mueller cross I assume?

The color is disappointing considering the Prosthechea vitellina parent and Cattleya milleri grandparent. There should be some bright clean orange flowers from this cross, and a dozen or more flowers per spike could be expected. This should be a definite cool growing hybrid, and that might account for the low flower count and aborted spikes as well as the less than optimal color. I assume your Florida growing conditions would not be described as cool this time of year. The Brassavola nodosa grandparent might be letting it get by in the heat, but not thrive.

Nice, I think the color will get better. My Bpl. Golden peacock is in bud right now. It has grown considerably well in the warm summer we have been experiencing, so I wouldn't say it is a cool grower, but I will wait for the blooms. When I got it in April it was already blooming, but about to fade, so blooming again in August, it sounds prolific to me.
