I bought this orchid about 3 months ago from a retail garden centre,
I was just wondering if it was possible to tell what the ID is or if it is impossible to know for sure at this point
Thanks, Steven

In my experience, it's really hard to get the taxonomy for a NOID of any kind - believe me, I've tried. There are certain characteristics of the Maudiaes, and within those, certain strains that show up pretty obviously (Raisin Pie, for instance) but there must be hundreds of variations starting "Hsingying", many of which are impossible to sort out unless you are a true expert in the field - and some of the members here are. You can look up hybrids that are registered and try to match pictures with names, but the more I look at paph hybrids, the more completely different parentages seem to produce nearly identical results. I've read that the biggest ID problem is that most of the hybrids on the market, esp. at retail stores, are the result of generations upon generations of hybridizing first actual species, then hybrids of those, and so on, and so on, until the original species characteristic is virtually undetectable. Run a search on this site for "paphiopedilum" or "NOID" and you'll get tons of results showing others' similar stories and dilemmas. The closer your NOID hybrid is to the actual original species parentage, the more likely you are to be able to get an id.
Now watch the paph experts here come along and ID your plant immediately - i should expect that after giving a short lecture when I've still had limited experience, but I wanted to help, if possible....
Good luck -
Maura
Sorry i cant help you with the ID but like Maura its unlikely to find the real id of this plant since there is so many of them that look identical even though different parents were used. Its a pretty one so enjoy the blooms
Well its a nice exhibition type....thats the best i can come up with![]()
