and I agree with Jose, if you can manage it...a wooden basket would be awesome. This plant will make an awesome specimen pretty quickly!

I don't have anywhere to hang a basket. It would be difficult to get a hook into my ceiling what with all of the cement everywhere. It did come with a pot to repot it into but until I get some more medium it will have to wait. What do you pot yours in - medium wise? Are they difficult to repot? Oh my, I am nervous now, I thought that I'd have about six months to a year before I'd have to tackle repotting.

When you are ready to repot, soak your plant in a bucket with warm water for about 10 minutes. Healthy keepable roots will be white or green. Anything brown or black remove with sharp scissors or clippers. Your local big box store will have a bag of orchid bark for cattleya, the wood baskets and what ever else you might need. There are several articles that go step by step with pictures. I'm sure if you look them up you will find what you need. Do not get nervous...plants are pretty hardy. Once you have done a few you realize it's pretty straightforward. Kill bugs, cut off bad stuff and put it into a new clean basket/pot and enjoy. When you are done, sit your orchid in lower light for a couple weeks and then watch it grow. I usually add a tiny amount of fertilizer and root hormone in my soak water. It helps the plant not shock from repotting and also gets those roots growing fast. Good Luck... I went outside and snapped one more picture for you...and in doing so noticed the plant has added another sheath on the pbulb in front of the one with buds...woo hoo. I hope your cattleya blooms nicely for you.

Thanks so much cdayinflorida. I know now how to repot it -I hope. One more thing, what bark is best? can I use one which I intend to also use for my oncidiums, phals and my phrags?

Is a wooden basket just another type of pot or is it specifically intended to be hung up somewhere? I have never seen any for sale where I live. Maybe a gardening centre would be the best place to look. Is it something that can be left on a table or a shelf or is it only to be hung up?

Everyone has there own special brand or type for repotting. I grow outside, so mine might not be the best for growing indoors. I digress and am going to let someone that does grow in "the great indoors" suggest make a suggestion.
And for growing inside a wooden basket might not be the best idea. It will have to be soaked.

Oops...I should have looked at your location first before recommending a basket. Sorry...a clay pot with nice slots on the side will do nicely for you. Probably even a plastic pot will work for you as long as there are enough openings/holes for ventilation.

Oh I am pleased about that because I don't really want to hang up baskets here. if I had my own house with a garden then by all means I would love to do that but in a council flat on the fourteeth floor of a tower block it really isn't the ideal. I will do what I always do and pot them in plastic pots with added ventilation. I hope that they are o.k until next week. I think I have the hang of potting one now so hopefully, I will soon have a healthy plant in the right sized pot. Thanks for all of your help.
