I've often looked at shroom kits and drooled over them but I'm afraid its too hot where I live and I have no place to keep them inside the house or i would be growing them out the wazoo!! lol
Very neat! I am rather curious about growing mushrooms myself.. but of course i'm automatically attracted to the species that are pretty much impossible to cultivate (i.e matsutake)
Its true, only homegrown surpasses shop bought in taste! But thats all we used to useThe best mushrooms to use are the field or portabello (the large flat brown tops) mushrooms-heat a pan with a SMALL amount of oil on the bottom, and then rub a little bit of sea salt, the avo oil again, and some different herbs like oregano, rosemary and sage, and a little bit of crushed garlic on the gills of the mushroom. Then fry them in the oil already in the pan
Dad usually places the mushrooms gills up in the pan, THEN he rubs the oil, herbs and garlic into the gills, so it starts to cook immediatly.
Great stuff, Jordan- I can see you will never go hungry! I too love mushrooms, wether to eat or admire (if inedible)... As a kid from the age of 3 onward I was somewhat obsessed by fungi and was always on the lookout when outdoors. Last summer when visiting my friends in Switzerland, my friend JV's wife and I went gathering in the pine forest above Neuchatel and came back with LOADS of cep. They were everywhere once you got your eye in, even though it was clear someone had already been a day or two before. Don't worry though- insects and slugs spoil plenty and so make sure they don't get picked! BTW they were out of this world tasty. Mm-mmm.
(Actually I was a funny kid and had a number of passionate obsessions: slugs and snails, the ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, cranes (the construction kind), fungi, moss, storks, washing my hands, chamomile, ostriches... and eating fruit- especially grapes and watermelons.)
Funny, I was just wondering yesterday if your shrooms were still producing.![]()

I have been thinking of doing this. Now you have motivated me. Is peat can coco peat?
