    Exclamation Rhynchorides Thai Noi

Size: 77.8 KBThe parentage is Aerides flabellata x Rhynchstylis coelestis . I suppose the breeder was hoping for a blue flabellata ; so was I.
We were both disappointed then. What we seem to have got is a plant which vegetatively looks like coelestis, with a smaller flabellata flowers , apart from having a poorer ( narrower and not fringed ) lip.

I am reminded of George Bernard Shaw, noted playwright, author and critic ( a very sharp witty man ) who proposed to a famous actress that they should have a love affair and produce a child ; Imagine said GBS - your looks and my brains. The actress turned him down , saying - but what if the poor child was unfortunate enough to be as dim as me and as ugly as you ?
I reckon the actress was not as dim as she pretended.
And orchid breeding works like this too, sometimes.

But it's still not something I would throw out with the trash! Cute little thing!

I assume the Shaw story was related by him and not the "dim" actress - which just reiterates his claim to high intelligence and mastery of the English language. I wonder how many divorced mothers wish they could have picked the genetic traits in their offspring?

As I divorced my children's father...years later I learned this first hand. I love my son and daughter with all my heart...but there are traits of the father i've often wished I could have left out somehow. Not to mention some of MY bad traits I'd have left out of my son and daughter as well...

I agree...didn't comment on the flower above. Its pretty for it's size...I think i'd abide it's shortcomings and call it a keeper.

I like this. Personally I think the lip is just the right size in proportion to the rest of the flower, though I admit the colour could be brighter. I have seen one where the overall colour of the sepals and petals was a brighter yellow and the lip, darker and slightly frilled. The nursery wouldn't sell that.

I scrolled down a bit...saw yellow, and thought 'an all yellow vanda-not bad...' then i scrolled down some more and saw the lip and i went That lip is so nice against the yellow! Maybe some more selective breeding can bring out a larger flower-sometimes it takes a few tries lol

Just an aside - but you're a woman after my own heart, Connie.

And now, back to the real topic here....

It may not be fringed. It may not be blue, but I like it for what it is. I also enjoyed the story about George Bernard Shaw and the actress. I wonder who she was? AL
