Yeh jason, i use pretty much anything available but its allocated as applicable to plant needs and ofcourse whether in sight or not, I have to have some level of aesthetic value. I used a 'natural sponge' that was just collecting dust in bathroom for my brassia, but sponge pretty much ripped apart with vigorous roots, but would be good for miniatures though instead of larger more vigorous plants that affect functionality. Loofahs last well for dends and oncids as does synthetic face wash sponge. I use aquarium filter sponge (alot more open and firm) for catasetums/ mormodes/cycnoche due to high risk of bulb rot and risk of similar decline when in close proximity to organic materials.Originally Posted by cakedaddy
Of all medias ,recycled or not, used/ experimented with to save money 'aquarium filter sponge' has been most succesful in direct relation to my grow situ. Apart from black the only alternative choices in terms of more compact or more open are blue and red so i tend to make friends with people who keep fish and buy them a cake about once a year.
Packaging like poly beads/ stryofoam is useful in confined areas like pots or holes in branches to open up space for air flow. I recommended it/ shared idea with a member here for pot phal culture. Ofcourse this is only applicable to moist, high humidity grow areas as water/moisture supply would be inadequate. My phrag bessae grows in container with sponge chunks and rock wool and with sphag for acidity need. It hates bark, med and lge grade?.
