Rhynchostylis gigantea var.alba - Survivor from Flood, This Year Bloom #5

Beautiful blooms , Lynn, and very impressive display. Unfortunately mine has just 5 flowers on the spike - the rest were eaten by insects. I have just come back from the New Year holidays and found only these five flowers . One of the spikes from my Rhy gigantea "orange' was also destroyed by thrips.

Very good spikes these - and how many on the plant ? I can't quite see. I have a couple of plants of this variety, both are in early spike, still some weeks/monmths away I guess , although I haven't been able to look at them for the last few weeks as I have been away from home, and have not got quite that far round the greenhouse yet; but it will be the second fllwowering on both my plants , the first flowering produced a single spike much shorter than yours - but then, my plants are clearly not as big as yours..

The 1st & 2nd picture from top have 2-3 spikes each, but other than in photos, they're squeezed between their leaves, maybe when they had started to bloom in early period, we didn't notice that, so we didn't manage to make all those spikes put their heads out of there,...if so, we can see some more blooming spikes, next time I'll keep an eye on them closely

Thank you, Yew! I was looking for your kind comments as always ^_^. Sorry to hear about the insects, we have encountered that with some plants, too (but not that much, most of them in the unsual condition might be from the flood for me). I also saw some few flowers spikes in the area, some were 1st time bloom(the smaller ones) but I just post something that can share their lovely spikes to everyone ^^.
How was your holiday trip? I've heard in the news that some Malaysia tourists like to come to Had Yai (SongKhla) for their Chinese New Year holidays trips, too. Wish you had a great time & belated "Happy Chinese New Year" to you, too!

Thank you, Lynn. You're right - Haadyai is flooded with Malaysian tourists during Chinese New Year. That's the reason I don't go to Haadyai during festival days. My 'holidays' in the Cameron Highlands was more a family get-together to share in the traditional New Year eve reunion dinner of 'steamboat' (hotpot) with my 90 yr old mum-in-law and brother-in-law and family and my youngest son who all travelled up from Kuala Lumpur. As this year's Chinese New Year holidays was a particularly long one, the Cameron Highlands was so crowded that there were traffic jams leading to the resort town - 2 hours just to travel 12km/7 miles!!! We just walked the mile from our apartment to the restaurant where we had our reunion dinner. I just don't know how the tourists found accomodation !

The traffic sounds just like Bournemouth..( popoular sea-side resort some 9 miles from where I live - I never go there unless I can't avoid it. This makes me think of an old English Music Hall ( popular entertainment venue a hundred years ago) song which has the line " Its the same the whole world over" , The rest of the verse goes...

WOW! Glad to know you had a great time on holidays! Cameron Highlands is one place I wish to visit, but never got the chance to go yet. My family members have been there around 10 yrs ago, but that time I was in the US as an AFS exchange student, so I missed it! My family really loved that place, they came back & told me how nice climate, beautiful landscape it was. Just one dissapoint thing was that they were there for only 2 days 1 night, spent almost 10 hrs also on the bus but being up there just for one night, that simply not enough. They were travelling with their friends as a tour group, so time plan were arranged by tour guide. Their trip were made of travel by train from BKK, after Cameron, they went to Kuala Lumpur for a sight seeing.
I also can imagine what you've experience about the traffic & crowded holidays, we've experienced the same in Chiang Mai, too, I was thinking
where are these people from....so so many tourists, seriously. I'm living with those heavy trafic everyday here, too.
Bangkok should be famous & champion for her super trafic jam, that should be added to travel guide book!!

Thanks Lynn. Cameron Highlands is definitely one place you've got to visit. I find that many Thai tourists also visit Cam Hlds but most unfortunately treat it as a side tour, from their main visit to the casino at Genting Highlands. When I first visited CH more than 50 years ago, I made a promise to myself that one day I would like to own a place here and thanks to my karma and with financial help from the sons I've managed to fulfill this dream and now have a cosy little 3 bedroom apartment in CH.

Cam Hlds is such a quaint little place with its vege,flower and strawberry farms, tea estates ; and its 'Englishness' of pseudo-Tudor architecture, strawberry and cream and tea and scones tradition and that unique Malaysian flavour - the mix of Chinese(farmers), Indian (tea estates) and Malays (administration) in food and customs. And of course, that beautiful climate a 'cool' 15 - 25 C temp throughout the year. I have posted some pictures of the Cameron Highlands elsewhere in my posts.

You're so lucky to have your own place upthere, I'm feeling happy for you ^_^. Feel so cozy & relax & refresh & ready to start a new day to imagine how it's like to spend leisure time on little lovely resort in such the place like Cameron. And another WOW!!! I really love big+fresh+sweet strawberry with fresh cream (and anything about it, haha). I'm also in love with tea; both afternoon tea with sweets & desserts style, thinking of that with the colonial or victoria interior & architecture style cafe or bakery shop, and also Chinese tea esp. sipping warm tea at the place with great nature surroundings in chilly cool climate(I've done that in Emei Mt. in Sichuan, Huangshan Mt. & The West Lake in Hangzhou, that's something relaxing moment during the long trip). Hmmm, so Cameron is just perfect for that, I think the tea estates should be a very scenic place to visit & enjoy, too. So, one day, I'll be there for sure ^_^. I also remember that my mom was talking about strawberry, vegetable farms, and butterfly when mentioned about Cameron, and if I got to be there, Cameron would be the main destination, not the secondary ones, as I'm not that into those casino places anyway.
