Cool blessings from the garbage: a taiwan love story, phal NOIDS

just as a little proof that my wild tales of orchid life here in taiwan aren't just a bunch hogwash... once again, just walking home from the grocery store after a long days work... belly full of street food dumplings... in the trash heap near a bus stop at the end of my street... there sat a discarded celebratory orchid display!
the flowers weren't even in bad shape, and the 7 plants with spikes are all very strong and will most definitely continue to flower after i cut the stems back... these street orchids are tuff ;-)
only thing is, i really dont have room for them nor do i particularly love the flowers, but ill pot them up and distribute them to people i know least likely to kill them! (im sure ill end up staking a few to one of my big slabs of fern board just cuz...)

Hi Shane - what a lucky find. Who throws orchids out like that?? good grief! Glad you are giving these a second chance. AND thanks for adding some color here too.

    cheers,

I would dumpster dive for that! I often wonder what happens to all those fantastic New Years displays. Around here, the only thing you can scavenge after a celebration is Tulip bulbs. . .

i kid you not, i find these so often that i honestly cant take them all! more often then not they don't get put in the garbage in such good shape...instead, i have to suffer seeing them placed outside of newly opened shopfronts in the blazing sun just burning to a crisp! jeffrey gives me a sideways glare, warning me to keep my hands off people's stuff (you can guess how i voted in THAT poll) but this time it was clearly placed in the garbage so he simply took the grocery bags from my hands and said, 'go get it, i know i cant stop you...'
good thing most of the ones i see like this are all just run of the mill whites or pinks and i can, though still reluctantly, walk away from them most of the time... but hey, this one has a substantial plastic lined basket that will make for a great replacement umbrella stand!

Nice find. Too bad you don't have any trees or a balcony railing to mount them upon.

What a good-hearted soul you are! Right now, I'm so frustrated with my catts, I fantasize about throwing THEM in the trash - but I can't bring myself to do it. I think your idea of giving the phals to friends is a very nice idea. My catts, I think, are going on the raffle table at our next orchid society meeting

Now, you made me want to slow down and really look at the garbage dumps whenever I go past them. Wishful thinking but I like to dream, LOL!!
