I would like to compliment you on the excellent culture of these catts . Alex has given you a very good explanation of species and hybrids and Pavel is correct re crossing of different varieties of the same species remaining species. As to reclassification, I am just as confused and frustrated and it plays havoc with my having to rewrite the names on the tags every now and then. Like Cathy sometimes I give up and just let the 'old' names remain.

Have to disagree with you, Alex. Glenn's first catt listed would still be a species. Cattleya labiata (note the "l" in "labiata" should be written in lower case) is a species. Cattleya labiata v rubra Schiller is just a varietal name for a particular individual/type of that same species. Therefore Cattleya labiata v rubra Schiller x C. labiata is simply a cross of two individuals of the same species. This, then, is still a species not a hybrid.

The others are all hybrids with Cattleya Astraea 'Ginny' being the only primary hybrid (Cattleya skinneri x Cattleya loddigesii) of those mentioned.
Yes, I know. i didn't look close enough the first time, you can see my correction.

Thank you everyone for the advice, I was contused but now it makes sense. Please correct me if I'm wrong but "Any species crossed with another species is a Primary hybrid. Any species crossed with a hybrid is a hybrid"

As far as culture, it took a lot of trial and error to find the right location in my area to grow the catts. C Aracaea Ginny took the worst beating, it was my trial plant, most of my cattleyas are on my trees, big Fluffy modern hybrids, I cherish my classics so I grow them in pots

Alex, the last picture is C Aracaea "Ginny" FCC/AOS

Label said its a skinneri x lodigesii hybrid. I got it in Orlando 2 years ago. It was sold as a bare root diivision.
