I checked the AOS awards, and low and behold, one was owned by a friend. I'll talk to him and see how he grew it.

Yes, it looks like Zelenkoa onusta (Oncidium onustum).

And with what is written on the tag, it could be Zelenkocidium Alohi (Oncidium orthostates x Zelenkoa onusta) or now, as registered on RHS (it's awful !!!) Nohawenkoa Alohi (Nohawilliamsia pirarensis x Zelenkoa onusta).
Nohawilliamsia pirarensis is the new name for Oncidium orthostates. I do not know if we have to thank the taxonomists !!!

So from what I'm getting from you pros, is: Nohawilliamsia pirarensis is the new name for Oncidium orthostates. It likes to be on the dry side and no direct light. Well, it is making it harder for us plebs to get familiar with names and plants when they are changing em. I'm not great with the names as you pros are so I'm pretty much lost. My question is; is the onustum /oncidium (Zelenkocidium) section of the plant, sans roots going to live or is it ...?

(Oncidium orthostates x Zelenkoa onusta) or now, as registered Nohawenkoa Alohi - (Nohawilliamsia pirarensis x Zelenkoa onusta).From my interpretation the plant is officially Nohawenkoa Alohi.

Nohawilliamsia pirarensis is one of two of the 'parentage' that had a name change from Oncidium orthostates as it was once known.
Zelenkoa onusta is the other parent. This (zel) x n. pirarensis = N. Aholi - the final result.

These ridiculous complexities and alterations are why for eg vanda lovers live in fear once again of changes. You can see why!? What a headache and Amey is going to put those responsible in prison.

1 - 'Nohawilliamsia Pirarensis' is the new name for 'Oncidium orthostates' - yes you were right in post 14.

2 - 'Zelenkoa Onusta' is the new name for ' Oncidium Onustum'.

Both 1 and 2 have been revised/ changed names. Newest is first in both 1 and 2.

No.P x Ze.O = Nohawenkoa Alohi (N.A).
* = names are NOW nill & void.

Ok now that we have the name down...here's a new question for you; Since this one likes to be on the dry side but needs a wetting often in the mix I made, can I try S/H with it? I have one piece without roots, I can experiment with that one? Advise me, my sage.

A plant without a functioning root system and sitting bare will benefit highly from sh a high humidity environment assisting in safe guarding the plant from exhausting its reserves in bulb storage. Its leaves absorbing moisture through cells stomata, a good supplement as far as its choices go anyway until it realises it foliar water intake is insufficient and instinct sends out new roots. Not sure on a bare foot rootless plant with psbs and prolonged water contact though with rot issues so high risk.

S/h for a plant with functioning roots will be down to experience of other members with this plant also and a general bout of advice for s/h dabblers. Are the plant roots oncid/ dend like- thin whitish and wire like as i know Zel. O s are.? My Zel is mounted bare to cork and sprayed daily x1 or x2 in response to days weather.

S/H cultivators please intervene. Will give your thread a bump later.
