The Tahitian premier beans are sooooooo divine and thick! I have to pay eight times the price of 'normal' Madagascan 'Tahitian' (same plant as the Tahitian only grown in Madagascar - Indonesia has them too). Try adding a split bean to a bottle of vodka and shake it once a day for a week then have some with blackcurrant juice..mmmm - M! lol
LOL Yep! Hate whisky unless it's a liqueur! I have several friends converted to vanilla vodka with blackcurrant!![]()
How do you grow your vanilla vines? I just received a nice cutting, nonvariegated, in trade, but I have killed a number of these so could use some advice, potting mix, light etc? I saw one once in a greenhouse stuck in the ground and growing very well up the side of the greenhouse and was wondering about that. Are they at all frost tolerant?
I have what was sold to me as vanilla planifolia but turned out to be a pompona. Last Christmas I finished the last step in the process of making my own vanilla(putting beans in vodka and giving them as gifts). It was a process that took a year from bud to jar and took a lot of work. I pollinated the flowers before I went to work since they closed by the time I got home(they last less than a day). It took 2-3 yrs to grow the vine that big in the first place. Let it grow where it wants to. Once it started blooming I had to pollinate 5-7 flowers a day. I tried 2 different methods of pollination and the 2nd worked best. The vined started blooming around Feb and stopped around MAY. It worked me to death but it was worth it. The beans took several months to cure and are smaller than the planifolia beans. It was a fun project. The recipients of the home grown vanilla were delighted and wanted to see the vine.
Good luck with it!, never tried it before
I crossing my fingers for you!
