Lycaste Autumn Sun

My only fall-blooming Lycaste. It had 4 buds, but one blasted. Smells of poster paint (tempera). Natural spread of 10.0 cm.

Interesting color, I've never seen one of these before.

Do you happen to know when the leaves usually shed on Lycastes? I bought an aromatica in the Spring and thought it would have dropped its leaves by now, but maybe its not until the end of Fall, start of Winter at the Solstice?

That is really an interesting bloom, Sue.

There is really no set time for them to drop their leaves, matt. They usually drop their leaves when the weather gets cooler (winter), but we have had cycnodes that stay green all winter and once the new growth comes up, the old growth drops its leaves. Lycastes put up a new growth also, so it will depend on the temperature and how 'hard headed' the plant is as to when it will drop its leaves. In the wild they are deciduous so 'winter time' is when the leaves go.
