Schomburgkia back bulbs, what to do?

Thanks for everyone's input. Different things work for different people in varied environments. I will consider everone's advice and try to figure out what works for this plant in my environment. You guys are all great with great information!

So let me pose another question about the same plant. As you can see form the picture the active bulbs are at the very top of the mount. I would like to put it on a new mount. Would it be OK to remove it from this mount and reattach to another. I am not concerned if the plant sulks for awhile after the remount. Eventually it will need to happen based on the way it is growing. The current mount is too big to attach to another mount.

Hi Miller, attached find the picture from your Schomburgkia mount. Make a cut (shown by the red dotted line) between the 4th and the 5th pseudobulb from the bottom. The 2nd and the 4th pseudobulbs will probably have dormant buds at their base which will produce a new growth.



Ans for the other division, you can simply saw off the extra mount and put the entire division with the smaller mount in a basket. When it overflows the mount you can simply snap it up and mount it on another log or put that in a basket without disturbing the mother mount.

So to make sure I understand. Are you saying to cut the back bulbs off and saw the mount in half, then tie the active growing piece to a new mount and put the back bulbs in a basket?

No, I meant you had two options,
1) Just cut between the pseudobulbs but leave both the divisions as they are on the same mount. That they keep growing but as individual plants on the same mount.

2) You make the division and also saw the mount in two pieces. But your top divisions have no more mount left for new growths, so you can put the top division with the sawed off mount in a basket.

i would make the cut and remove the three leafless pb....leaving the pb with the single leaf...to help feed d plant...as it has a leaf its photosynthesising a lot more than those old backbulbs....also keeping in following rules of thumb by leaving 4 to 6 pb per division to ensure a healthy plant.....but wud u sacrifice the extra energy that the pb with the leaf wud provide the main plant with for one or two "possible" growing buds?? if u really wanna neaten the plant and try to grow d backbulbs cut between pb 3 and not between pb 4 not pb4 and pb5...i wont sacrifice a viable pb to try to grow a "possible" dormant eye...when it is serving the main plant in a noble fashion...its not worth it...

I am in the process of downsizing my snake collection. While going through my snake room (which will become my orchid room this winter), I found a piece of cork that was once used as a hide for a snake. Here are pictures of my remounting attempt. I did not cut the orchid, I position the active growth next to the new mount and secured the two together. I hopefully will get the benefit of a successful remount in the future and the plant was not harmed in the process. The BB are facing the back of the mount so they are still there just not on the size with the "pretty" growth.
