Oncidium Sphacelatum Orchid -“ Sweet Sugar

I`ve just bought an Oncidium Sphacelatum with a few yellow flowers.
This forum has been very helpful with my Phals but I now want try to nurture and care for one of these.
It`s not in a pot yet so I really need to know what size pot and what type of potting medium.
Do I treat it like a Phal and spray every mornintg and soak once a wekk?

Hi Martyn - Oncidium Sweet Sugar is one of the easiest orchids I've had to care for, so you've chosen a good subject for nurturing. It's hard to tell from your photo what kind of shape your plant is in, and what medium, etc. Can you post a larger picture and describe its condition a little more?

Martyn, what to grow it in really depends a lot on where you are and the conditions under which it will grow. Generally speaking, my oncidium orchids like a bark mixture - but the finer the roots are, the finer the mixture can be. Where I grow them it's so dry that I actually put some sphagnum moss into the bark mixture, but in most areas, that wouldn't be advisable.

As far as a pot, estimate the smallest pot that the roots and some bark mixture will fit into. It's hard to tell the size, but I don't think I'd go any larger than a three- to four-inch pot.

Just one quick thought - if the blooms are on the sparse or past-peak side, you should probably cut the spike(s) to let the plant put all its energy into adjusting to being repotted and, hopefully, putting out some new growth for you. Once you repot, you should place it in a shady place for at least a week. As for the appropriate medium, I agree with Patty. Oncidium roots are generally much finer than phal roots, so you'll probably want a smaller mix than you have your phals potted in - but that's really just guessing at this point.

Looks like it's in a very terrestrial medium - you might want to repot in fine fir bark instead. What about the blooms?
