Vanda sanderiana var. immaculata Golamco cannot be taken as a taxonomic variety. It is just a horticultural variety or cultivar. It is the resultant due to the series of selective line breeding done on V. sanderiana var. albata. This was initiated by the Hawaiian orchid breeders, to do away the traces of other color which stain the original var. albata, The effort finally purified the color to immaculate. I have written and called the attention of the Philippine Orchid Society and have submitted an article for their official magazine, discussing and elaborating the invalidity of the name V. sanderiana var. immaculata Golamco. Unfortunately, the current board of directors of the Phil. Orchid Society (2010) refuses to publish my treatise.



Vanda sanderiana var. immaculata is an invalid name as a taxonomic variety. This is because the plant is a resultant of series of selective line breeding done on variety albata. As such it is just a horticultral variety or cultivar. As per ruling of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (IUCN), any plant resultant to human intervention or breeding and is not found in nature cannot be given a taxonomic name, but just popular or commercial name, i.e. not Latinized name.

Thanks for enlightening us with your post here at this forum. But i think this article was already published in several scientific journals , books, internet sites and some Vanda sanderiana variety immaculata orchids received awards from local orchid shows. What did the Philippine Orchid Society board said ? I think i have seen an article in an on-line journal indicating that the type specimen was deposited in the National Museum ( Herbarium ) Manila .
If that is the case , You should have also called the attention of the National Museum and all local orchid societies to stop using the Vanda sanderiana variety immaculata .

I have a black and white communication with the Phil Orchid Soc. regarding the issue about the taxonomic anomaly of V. sanderiana var. immaculata. If you saw any on-line nformation that the herbarium specimen of the var. immacukata was deposited in the Phil. Nat'l Herbarium, then that too is a misinformation. The curator of PNH Dr. D. Domingo Madulid and I were together when we did an investigation over the issue. There was no any physical specimen deposited there.

I do believe that Mr. Danilo Tiu's treatise on this matter is valid and based on scientific fact unlike some of the misinformation and wild speculation being propagated by some members of the Philippine Orchid Society.
