Phapiopedium : Sherry Baby

I got this orchid as a gift i was a large plant in a 3 inch pot and the roots were so many you could not actually see the pot and it had not compost at all....so I had to divide it just to pot it up I did not have a clay pot large enough for all the plant.

I was told this was wrong and I should have just went and got a larger clay pot but I am older and I can not lift large pots. so I see it as if one dies I can still have 2 more....one has a stalk a small one and i made sure when I cut the plant I was careful and made sure the smallest bunch had 4 bulbs.

now my question...

I was told this is the hardest type orchid to grow what do you all say?

I have 2 demb's. and 2 large phals. and 4- miniature ones. phals that is.


how do I care for this shary Baby???

I put the plant in the mixture in a bunch of everything my on combination. free flowing .


I was told its a beauty of a plant but I have always stayed away from this type of orchid because of what heard.

any help well be so grateful and as I said I do not know a thing about this type of orchid....HELP!!!!!!!!

Can't see your pic, don't know if it is a paph or an oncidium. The only one that I have heard of is an oncidium. Oncidiums have bulbs, sounds like you did just fine. Lots of light and plenty of water to keep bulbs plump. I always chop mine up, they just get too big to handle. I planted my last group in lava rock before that they were in bark chip... I find them easy to grow. Sherry Baby smells like chocolate and is very popular.

I suspect your orchid is actually an Oncidium Sharry Baby. Dividing this orchid should not hurt it as it is a fast grower when the conditions are right. Make sure it doesn't dry completely out and gets good, bright light. You'll be dividing them again before long....

Thanks I was running out of pots and now on one the leaves are falling off I may have damaged them in the cutting process I was careful but even as careful as yu can be its almost imposable not to cut into something. So far they are looking good in the other 2 pots they have not lost any leaves and they are a bit larger. I watered them actually flooded them so I have not had to wart again yet, I like my orchids according what medium there in to be on the dry side. I have a water meter tester I know a lot of people do not like those but other than spag I use different potting medium in different type orchids.I have saved a lot of houseplants using it. I just never received a orchid with no type of anything to show me what it was suppose to be planted in and it all roots and covered the tiny pot....amazing.
