Encyclia (Gay Rabbit)

I ended up mounting it and it loves being mounted. It has sent out tons of roots some growing around the mount! I've actually bought several more Encyclias and all are now mounted and all are putting out roots. I have them outside and it is very humid here most of the year, I also installed a watering system that goes off three times a day in the summer, Ive reduced it a bit since it has started cooling off.

i put my cordigera in the 8" treefern pot. used some bark mix with pearlite and treefern fiber. it started to look shrivelly, but it is very dry here... so i have tucked sphagnum around the nest of aerial roots. seems to be keeping it from drying out too much, but i still need to spray almost every day. the loose sphagnum seems to hold enough mositure for the roots to have a drink. now as long as i don't get the poor thing rotting, it might be ok. it is rooting into the pot, and i could nto remvoe it now without some damage. but it took a few months to get the roots growing. i did assume i would kill the poor thing, but so far, so good. i have even ordered a hybrid between cordigera and encyclia alata, hoping to keep that one outside all winter.

Funny thing... I just mounted one of my divisions of my "Gay Rabbit" last week. Because I live in a warm environment most of the year I decided to mount in a way that would hold on to moisture more than just bare root. I had some very old burlap that I placed on the outside of the sphag. moss to make-shift a pot like mount. I left the back side next to the drift wood bare so that the roots can grab hold on to the wood. I check often to make sure I am not letting stay dry too long.

I am sure it will thrive like mine has, living in Houston I am sure my conditions are not much different than yours. Because of my watering system I did not add much moss.
