I certainly wouldn't use holly - it's toxic to people and animals, I wouldn't trust it with an orchid.

Useful to know . The one I use most is gorse - Ulex europeaus - a member of the pea family. It burns in the heathland fires we get in this part of the world, in dry summers ( or is positively burnt off by the Rangers, to encourage new grow of the heath - Erica sp,) and that gets rid of all the thorns and green stuff and the twigs too , leaving the branches which are never more than 2 inch or so diameter, and I can fairly easily find pieces a foot or two long to put in my rucsac when I am out with my walking club . Cattleyas love this stuff, and it sems quite rot resistant.
