I know what you mean about the color, which is a dark dark purple that turns red with light is flashed on it. a busy schedule turns out to be the perfect way to stake a paph...you stake the spike loosely when it develops, then ignore the thing while it opens. a few days to a week later when you get around to admiring it, the flower has set and you can tie it straight upright.
