I've seen Phal. cornu-cervi thrive both in a sphagnum pot and mounted with scarcely any medium at all. It seems as though getting the overall moisture (watering plus humidity) is a key factor. I'm not at all good with sphagnum and phals, so I'm fascinated to watch how yours goes.
I have issues with watering too much...so I stay away from sphagnum as much as possible. Lucky for me this one is so hardy...
