I think that it has to dry out between heavy rains, or it will develop rot pretty quickly. That's why it makes a good home for epiphytes that don't need to stay wet...

I grew up in Joshua Tree Ca, and that stuff is everywhere. You would have to find a piece from the base or something to use, otherwise the branches are too thin and unable to support and orchid much less transport, bumps, etc. I was going to go down to Joshua Tree for spring break (woo hoo) but my work doesnt pay me the equivalent of what I make them in selling tillandsia, orchids, etc. Cork is so much cooler than cholla.
