interestingly, I was amazed at the confusion regarding Phaius tancarvillae that arose in a recent orchid society meeting... mainly because, as you mention, many plants that have been labeled as such are actually hybrids, or another species of Phaius!

Seems, that taxonomically, there are plenty of work to be had in the orchid world
