So I have this plant that is not putting out any new roots. can I cut it and do something to get the top piece to root. I was in this condition when I got it but has put out only 2 roots in the time that I have had it and those roots aren't very robust. I've recently attached some Nutricote to the stem.

just realized where the firs post went! lol. It is under a sprinker system with the other Vandas that goes off twice a day for 15 minutes.

Do you have a root inside the bag of Nutricote ? I am not familliar with Nutricote. What we get here is Osmocote, I guess that this is similiar.

You should not be cutting the stem unless there are AT LEAST 3 strong healthy roots above where you intend to cut. IMHO I would leave it alone, keep fertilising the existing healthy roots, and wait until the top sends out some roots before cutting.

To answer the original question - No, you cannot top it to induce roots. The division needs roots first.

I have a recalcitrant ascocenda in a similar state, so I am immersing it entirely in a bucket of water containing one ounce per gallon of KelpMax to try to induce new root growth. It's been in there an hour now, so I think I'll go hang it back up.

No roots inside the bag. The nutricote is suppose to be better at releasing the fert over a longer period of time and not dumping all the nutrients at once if the temp is high (at least that is my understanding of the difference). Also, nutricote is not suppose to burn roots if in direct contact.
