Chamaedorea elegans

I thought it was a bamboo. My husband thought it was a palm tree. It's nickname is the Bamboo Palm. But it is neither...ahem! It is called a Chamaedorea elegans. This thing is cool whatever you call it, and doubles as my vanda hanging post and pitcher plants home all summer. Apparently the extra water and nutrients has made this one very very happy Chamaedorea. And it also enabled me to find out what it was as the ex-owner had no idea what the names of the plants in the yard were. In the first picture you can see an unopened pod on the right side.

*Ahem* Slight correction, m'dear. It is a palm. Chamaedorea belong to the Family Arecaceae (sometimes also known as Family Palmae or Palmaceae). All members of that Family are palms.

If you say so...LOL! After reading and reading about those things all I know is that I love every one of them.

Indeed, it is a very well grown palm, but its not Chamaedorea elegans. That species is a small growing palm to little more than 2m high and with a solitary, cane-like trunk that never forms basal suckers. The flower spike of your plant is also very different. Difficult to tell exactly which Chamaedorea you have from the pic. but it has the look of C. hooperiana about it. Very nice palm

Connie, if I am right, your palm is what is commonly known down here as 'Golden Cane' and is a popular garden plant.

But, it can become a monster if left to its own devices. It has more territorial ambitions than Napoleon! The thing to do is to decide how big you wish the clump to be and then remove any new shoots arising from the base. The existing trunks reach maturity and will grow happily for many years.

I had pretty much figured it would keep going outwards, and so I make sure the husband cuts back any new growth we don't want. It is all around the yard and I love how beautiful they get. I understand them being popular...I wouldn't mind cutting a couple in half and put them all around the fence.

We also call them "Golden Palms". They are quite beautiful, and their fronds will turn "golden" if they are growing in a garden with full Sun.

Connie, I also use my palms for shade for some of my 'chids. I have to pay attention to when they come into bud, and I remove the pod before it opens (though the flowering pod is very pretty) because when it opens the tiny flowers drop and fall into the axels of the stem and leaf where they keep wet and sets up fungi. they also fall into the pots causing the same problem. This has been my experience.
