Ok, so I just "finished" a drawing from the Dartmouth field trip. A lovely orange Cattleya (though you can't tell from the B&W drawing). I hope I captured it well.

Oh well, it is of Cattleya aurantiaca. Lemee know what you think.

for some reason, most drawings that I have seen have the light source coming from "over the right shoulder", the bloom moves right to left. I'm not sure why this is. but even my botanical illustration book points this out. But I gues I should also technically include the roots at the bottom, but thos were in the pot, and I was not about to up root someone elses plants to draw those.

LOL! You're right Aaron, I'm sure Lisa appreciated that you didn't unpot your subjects. Besides, nude drawings in the greenhouse? What will be next?

Very nice rendering. The leaves on that species are quite wide, and you captured that well.

As far as the angle of the shot, horticulturally it would be good to see the flowers head on. But you're right about lighting. A good friend is the grand-neice of Frank Benson - the most famous of American impressionist painters. Studying art as a child (she's now a famous sculptor), he always told her that painting and drawing are entirely about light.

So keep drawing - great stuff!
