What is this can anyone say??

It seems that each day brings something of the Creator to brighten our life and make us smile a little more, well thanks to Him. I went orchid and fruit hunting again in my back yard under the mango trees, because I realize that there are times I might miss something I am interested in, so I saw this flower high up in one of the mango tree and the colour was so rich from where I could see it, I wonder if it is an orchid or a lily and does anyone know what it might be? cause the plant on which it grows is a lot and I would like to know if it is worth while trying to reach it to take it down, I did manage to get a small piece to show. , , ,

Looks to be a type of tropical, epiphytic cactus ... perhaps an Epiphyllum.

Hi Maggs,

I agree that it certainly looks like an Epiphyllum. Do a search on the internet and see if your flower matches anything there. If it is that, you may have quite a job trying to catch the flower in bloom (being so high in your tree) since many of them open in the late evening and by daybreak they are gone. Very beautiful blooms and highly scented. In this forum look in "the Jungle' section there are some pics. there.

Apparently the flower had opened last night because it looks as if it is closing up completely to drop off. I once had one called Dutchman's Pipe that bore a white lily that would only do so at night and when you checked it every hour you would see that by midnight it would be fully opened with a really strong lovely smell and in the morning it would droop and then in a day or so be lifeless, but the leaves were different to this one they did not have little barbs like this cactus does, but I will put it on a piece of tree branch and see what happens from there.

Thanks Angela, well I was just browsing and saw one flower that said it is a Dragon Cactus but still not too sure so I am looking, oh did u see my cherries in another post? I know that you have them there too.

Sorry I did not, I tried to find it but I only see the only see the one with the Mangos.

I'm going out on a limb here, but most Epiphyllum I know of are usually flatter and broader in structure,yours looks more triangular , my guess would be nyctocereus (sp) or a tropical climber. I would let the end dry out and place it next to a tree so it can grow up it and place the callused end in the dirt. the blooms are beautiful if you can remember to go out at night and check

Selenicereus perhaps rather than Epiphyllum, but definitely a cactus.

Hi thanks for your replies, well it is a cactus but it does not climb I saw it up in the tree between another plant that someone has called elephant ears and when I googled it the group to which it belongs is oncidium, and it bears a long flower spike with some sort of orange looking blooms, it was just hanging off of that plant which is so prevalent in the mango trees that are here, I am sending this pic for you to see the length of the plant's leaves where the cactus sits in the middle and the branches hang, and also it is triangle in shape too with little barbs that cactus have, I will plant this piece in a pot with wood chips just to see how big it can get and what it will produce.
