Three geese and some quail

My mom and dad live on a small farm and have always raised different animals. I was visiting recently and snapped a few shots of some of the birds.... The first are Chinese Geese. The Chinese Goose is a breed of domesticated goose descended from the wild Swan Goose. Chinese geese differ from the wild birds in much larger size, and in having an often strongly developed basal knob on the upper side of the bill. (according to Wikipedia)








The last photo here is of some domesticated quail. In the front is a male Bob White Quail. A few female ones can be seen with the brown heads in the photo as well. This particular quail is called the Northern Bobwhite. Not really sure why 'Northern', but I guess Texas is North of some places in the world.

I wonder why the geese have that bulbous thing? Interesting look... And the quails are too pretty.

Nice head shots of the geese, Bruce! I like the different 'expression' of each of them. We used to rear them for food and prefer them to turkey (we kept them as well) as the meat is not as dry as turkey. Any one going to Hong Kong should not miss their roast goose - simply the best of HK fare , the dim sum notwithstanding. As children we liked to tease the geese and make them chase us all over the place, all the while laughing and screaming at the top of our voice. Grandma wasn't amused and used to admonish us. Like you we had all sorts of animals - chickens, ducks, guinea fowls,geese, turkey,pigs; these were all reared for food or to sell off the excess. We even had 2 Bajau (Borneo) ponies just after the War II, the ones used by the Japanese invaders and auctioned off after their surrender. We had to sell them off after 2 years as Grandma didn't like them going into the padi fields and destroying the rice plants. Of there were also the dogs - all 7 of them.

We never ate the Geese, but did eat the turkeys and chickens. The quinea we had were basically alarms for when snakes (or anything else for that matter) would try to get the eggs. Talk about a noisy alert! My folks still raise lots of these and my fridge here is full of fresh farm eggs from a recent visit.

Great shots, Bruce, and the various stories added by others above are very interesting. The Geese are beautiful, we do not see these in my part of world. They look very threatening. I am familiar with Peking Ducks which we have here, and they make terrific noise, and will attack you if you go into their territory.
Wish I could get some of those fresh home farm eggs!!
