Ahh, if only! To be able to grow lychee in our climate!
Both Ian and Kitty are quite correct ... it is the fruit/seedpod of a kana or canna. (Here in the US it is often referred to as a "canna lily" but it is not related at all to lilies. It's actually related to ginger and banana.) In some parts of the world its rhizome is used as a food starch but in the US it is typically grown as an ornamental.
