Keiki paste experiement

i try to use keiki paste on my 2 No. id Phals. same method but different only i cut flower stalk on the first one but the second one still full stalk.

here're the result.

first one got a lots of keikies and the second one has a new flowers stalk and bloom like crazy

i like to share my experience and what you need to expect from the keiki paste.

congrats on keiki's. quite healthy phal in a Nice S/H system . do you grow all your phals in S/H?. I will have to try the keiki paste one day...dont seem to get readily in India though.

thank you,about 95% of my phals grow in S/H but....i kill about 25 of them at once .no matter you know about s/h,you can make mistake
one thing that you need to know about this system is you need an active root ,i bought them from some vender with roots and leafe cut and jump to the system and they all die in one week from root rot

later on,i bought a new set ,fresh from plug and again grow them in s/h ,all are doing well .for another small one ,i mount them on a pice of wood and they're doing o.k

i went out to make a picture,all phals in S/H .they all moved inside the house for the winter as you can see i have different stage of phals.



i prefer to stay in a dry side not to have root rot

Kitty, i envy you!!! I tried on my mature phals and two of them got root rot, but i manage to save them and put them back in their original medium, which sphagnum moss. For now, i only have 1 mature phal on S/H (hopes it can survive the s/h)

But my phal seedlings and vanda are adapting well on s/h.

I hope I'm not overdoing this response, but...

OF COURSE you get root rot when transferring a plant into S/H culture. It is expected.

When roots grow, they "tailor" themselves on a cellular level so that they will function optimally in that environment, and once those cells have grown, they cannot change. Move them into a different environment, and those roots are no longer optimal for the environment, so are stressed, and will eventually die and rot. How quickly that happens is determined by the degree of difference between old and new root zone environments.

Even old bark and fresh bark constitute different environments. (I'll create another thread on that in a moment)

That is why it is important to repot just as new roots are emerging from the plant and actively growing. They will be tailored for the environment and support the plant, while the old roots fade away.

So far, all of my orchids I have moved to s/h are doing well. Several have grown new roots already into the leca and it has been less than a month since I moved my first orchid into s/h. One has spiked since going s/h.

I re-pot them and then let them go. Sink or swim!

I haven't tried a Phal in S/H, some of my other plants seem to love it, others not so much. I have a problem with remembering to water them enough in S/H for one. My healthy Catt's thrive in it. My Phals have been thriving in their bark/moss mix so I don't see a reason to experiment with them. Maybe if I get some keikis with my keiki paste experiment, I'll have spares to experiment with! I haven't put the paste on yet, my Phals are in full bloom and not ready, or not in bloom at all.
