Cutting spike to re-bloom poll

Hi everyone, I am curious as to how many members cut the spikes on their Phals.
after the flowers are spent. I am sure all of the older forum members have tried this at least once, however some of the newer members might not have and possibly don't know about it.
I have posted a noid Phal. that has re-bloomed on a old spike and also has a new spike. I thought it would be interesting to some especially those who haven't tried it. Not a great picture
but you can see the flowers are not as large or as many as on the new spike. Look forward to

Hey Hank, I grow Phals for a few years now and I always cut spikes at the very bottom. I could probably cut them a bit higher and wait for them to re-bloom but I don't want to disturb their cycle. I know my plants very well and you get bigger and nicer flowers if you let them to actually grow new spikes of course

I'm a spike cutter. Kita is right, blooms get bigger if the plants focus is not preoccupied with an older spike.

I do both...the Sogo Yukidian plants are strong enough to produce pretty large side-spike flowers. If I feel that the plant is not in tip-top shape, I cut at the bottom and start feeding.

I often just leave them as long as they are green and happy and go for more blooms. I generally only cut spikes if they are dying back anyways. Most of my Phals are older plants and plenty strong enough to bloom more. I find less happy/big plants won't hold a spike anyway, it will just die off.

I cut some and leave some. I guess I'm testing to see what works best.

Anymore, I let them do what they want. If the spike or a portion of it dies, then I cut it. If they want to rebloom an old spike, then I let them. Nice looking plant, BTW.

I think I am just going to cut them off and not try to rebloom immediately. Perhaps I am just too flaky, but I think I enjoy them reblooming from scratch. I think I will enjoy flowers more after a break from them before they reappear.

Always! one of my phals is even producing a keiki!

When I first started growing, I had one Phal bloom continuously for three years from one or the other of it's 2 spikes. It never grew a new spike during that time. I now cut spikes in late summer/early fall.
