Most of my Phals are potted in the decorative ceramic pots with a lot of holes in them in large bark with some sphagnum moss to hold some moisture (I live where it is dry and don't water a lot). For me that works well, so I don't mess with it.
I will leave a new Phal in the little plastic pot in moss if the roots are good and watch it very closely and water sparingly. If it comes to me soggy or with iffy roots, I leave the flowers on it and re-pot it. If it's stressed it'll drop the flowers pretty quickly any way, then I cut back the stem. If it's happy enough to keep the flowers, I let it.
